Department of Anesthesiology

Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the University of Louisville. Our Department provides excellent educational programs for residents, fellows, medical students, SRNA’s and other health care professionals, as well as outstanding care for patients undergoing surgical procedures, labor and delivery, intensive care, and treatment for acute and chronic pain. Our faculty and fellows engage in a wide range of research. We also provide medical direction for the John M. and Dorothy S. Paris Simulation Center at the medical school.

I returned to the Department in June 2007 after spending two years as Chair at West Virginia University. My homecoming has been terrific.  The University of Louisville and the Department have flourished under strong leadership while I was away.  I am now the interim Chair for the Department as our previous Chair, Dr. Lindsey Henson has ascended to a Vice Dean position at the University of Minnesota.  Even though we have been sad to see her off, we are very happy that she is pursuing a dream, which is part of our culture at the University of Louisville. Dr. Henson described this Department as having a highly collegial faculty with diverse backgrounds and clinical strengths, exceptional residents and truly outstanding support staff.  I could not agree more.  We work in anesthesia care teams with excellent CRNAs and student nurse anesthetists.  I assume the interim responsibilities of leadership in the Department as we look for a new Chair to lead an already solid Department to the next level.
