Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept any International applications from schools other than what is listed?

We receive many applications, both International and Domestic, but only have a very limited number of available elective openings. We only accept International applications from those institutions that hold affiliations with the School of Medicine. You may send us an email requesting a waiver and we will review the request on a case-by-case basis.

How long does the process take for applying for an elective?

We like to provide a six - eight month window for International students to allow for VISA and travel processing. Domestic students can range from two weeks to four weeks depending on the Department and application capacity levels.

If I am denied an elective can I re-apply for another elective or re-take the TOEFL exam and apply again?

Unfortunately, once your application has been processed and denied, we will no longer accept a new application due to the volume of applicants.

Will you waive the TOEFL score?

No. The TOEFL score requirement is 100 and cannot be waived. This is a crucial part of our application evaluation as we want to ensure students participating receive a good learning medical experience and can communicate as needed with both patients and physicians.

Is there a fee for attending an elective or tuition costs?

We do not charge elective or tuition fees, however, there is a one-time $50 application fee processed in OVISTA at registration. This fee is non-refundable and helps us continue to provide a strong tuition free clinical elective program. If you are approved, you will be responsible for housing, travel and food expenses.

What is the dress code for visiting students?

Students should dress in business attire. A white short coat is required - one can be purchased in the Medical Bookstore for $30.00.

If you have any further questions, please email us at and we will respond as quickly as possible.

Do I need to purchase professional liability insurance for my rotation?

No.  Domestic students will have professional liability insurance verified by their institution in VSAS.  KMRRRG will provide international students a shared coverage in the amounts of $1 million per instance and $3 million aggregate.  Any questions regarding our liability insurance policies and coverage should be directed to Kentuckiana Medical Reciprocal Risk Retention Group at 502-569-2060.
