Mouse Core

The goal of the Mouse Core is to facilitate the rapid translation of novel approaches to cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment through the use of transgenic mouse models of cancer.   A major problem for cancer researchers who seek to move their approaches into the clinic has been the limited, on-site availability of validated transgenic mouse models of cancer that are highly relevant to the human disease. The costs and time associated with establishing and maintaining such models typically prevent investigators from testing many new therapeutic modalities despite the well-established principle that transgenic mouse models of cancer are more relevant and predictive of success in the clinic than xenograft models of cancer. The Mouse Core facilitates the translational objectives of Cancer Center investigators by developing coordinated resources, techniques, expertise and a large herd of experiment-ready transgenic mice for the testing of novel cancer approaches. The initial goal has been to establish colonies of the transgenic mice and to then confirm the reproducibility of disease progression and to develop methods for longitudinal monitoring of tumor progression or regression without the need to euthanize the animal.  Our long-term objectives will be to provide ready access of transgenic mouse models of cancer to junior and senior cancer researchers at the University of Louisville in order to facilitate the testing of novel anti-cancer compounds and strategies.  Our specific services:

1.  Maintain, distribute and provide pre-clinical toxicity and efficacy support for transgenic mouse models of melanoma, childhood neuroblastoma, lung, breast, prostate, colon, pancreatic and hematological cancers.

2. Provide technical support for genotyping, specimen collection and processing, and PK analyses.

3. Assist with  state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging services for the detection of tumors and response to novel therapeutic agents.
