Pediatric Hematology - Oncology Fellowship

The goal of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology fellowship training program at the University of Louisville is to train the best leaders in academic and clinical pediatric hematology/oncology in the United States. Upon successful completion of our training program, fellows will have a comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology of pediatric hematologic and oncologic disorders and will be competent in the clinical diagnosis and management of those disorders. Graduates will continue to add new knowledge in the field through their scholarly activity, and by their ability to teach the pediatricians of the future.

For much of the first year, the hematology/oncology fellow will be assigned to the inpatient service at Norton Children’s Hospital. Working alongside a full-time faculty member and other healthcare personnel of the interdisciplinary team.  The fellow will manage in-patients with presumed and established hematology and oncology diagnoses. This rotation also provides the opportunity to gain proficiency in bone marrow aspiration and biopsy and lumbar puncture with the administration of chemotherapy. During this inpatient rotation, the fellow will become the primary care provider for various oncology patients that they will follow in the outpatient continuity clinic under the supervision of a faculty member.

Master's Degree in Clinical Investigation Sciences

During the second and third years of fellowship training, the fellow will complete a clinical or laboratory research project. While working on that project, the fellow can pursue a Master's Degree in Clinical Investigation Sciences from the School of Public Health & Information Sciences (SPHIS).

"I chose the University of Louisville to pursue my pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship for the diverse patient population and clinical cases. I received extensive exposure to the bread and butter heme/onc cases and the medically complex patients requiring multidisciplinary team management. Throughout my three years, I had autonomy with the right balance of supportive mentorship that set the framework for me to think through complex cases and develop plans.  The faculty were (and still are) genuinely committed to my education and success. The support team of NPs, pharmacists, nurses, nurse navigators, social workers, and psychologists (and the list doesn't end there) were also invested in helping me become a proficient and well-rounded attending. They were indeed a family and helped make stressful times more bearable. I had the opportunity to participate in both clinical and translational laboratory research, which taught me so much and afforded me opportunities to present at national conferences.  They did a fantastic job preparing me to be a thoughtful pediatric heme/onc physician and were key in helping me find a job."

"I am grateful for the opportunity to work with the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology faculty and staff at the University of Louisville.  In my first year of fellowship, my knowledge base and clinical skills have grown tremendously due largely to the varied patient base we see in our region.  Understanding our patients with cancer and blood disorders and their families through their therapies has been an honor and has further motivated me to hone my research and clinical studies in this hugely rewarding field."
