Our acupuncture experts provide pain relief and treat multiple other pediatric conditions in children through the use of acupuncture and alternative medicine treatments. These specialists are board-certified pediatricians who have completed acupuncture training at Harvard University.
Japanese acupuncture is offered to pediatric patients through a variety of alternatives: needle acupuncture, electroacupuncture (a form of acupuncture using a small electric current, moxabustion (the burning of a mugwort plant), laser acupuncture (a form of acupuncture using a cold laser), auricular (ear) acupuncture and ion cord current transfer.
Treatment is offered as an outpatient service and an inpatient pediatric acupuncture consultation service at Norton Children’s Hospital.
The pediatric acupuncture clinic was started in November of 2010. Three years later, more than 180 children had been treated at 1,080 different visits. Pediatric acupuncture is well-tolerated and is a safe and effective resource for children with pain including migraine headaches, back pain, neck pain, abdominal pain, abdominal migraines, complex regional pain syndrome, fibromyalgia and other chronic pain conditions. Acupuncture can also be used to treat conditions not related to pain such as anxiety, allergies, and inflammatory bowel disease. Approximately 9 out of 10 children respond to pediatric acupuncture.
