Lab Overview

The Clinical Microbiology Laboratory Section is one of many laboratories in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Louisville Hospital. The primary mission of this section is to support the medical staff in the diagnosis of infectious diseases. The laboratory provides full services in the following disciplines of clinical microbiology: Bacteriology (aerobic and anaerobic); Antimicrobial and Antifungal Susceptibility Testing; Mycology; Parasitology; Mycobacteriology; Molecular Diagnostics; Virology; and, Serology. As part of the accreditation process required by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) the section subscribes to and participates in three proficiency testing programs: CAP, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC; HIV Antibody Testing, and the recently introduced Bioterrorism Proficiency program administered by CAP.

Who Staffs the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory?

The technical staff is comprised of 15 registered Medical Technologists, who are trained professionals and hold degrees in Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science and one Laboratory Assistant. The section is directed by a doctorate level clinical scientist, who is board certified in medical and Public Health Microbiology. The staff actively participates in continuing education activities, research, and teaching medical technology students, pathology residents, and infectious disease fellows.
