Ryan Residency Training Program

As a Ryan Residency Program, our mission is to integrate and enhance family planning training for obstetrics and gynecology residents.

Founded in 1999, the Ryan Program (http://www.ryanprogram.org/) is a privately funded national initiative based at the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco. Currently in the United States and Canada, there are 64 Ryan Programs designed to integrate and enhance family planning training for obstetrics and gynecology residents.

Residents learn –

  • consultation for contraceptive management of medically low and high-risk women
  • to provide long-acting reversible contraception (LARC)
    • Mirena and ParaGard IUD insertion and removal including lost IUD
    • Implanon implant insertion and removal
    • all options for pregnancy counseling
    • medical and surgical management of miscarriage and fetal demise
    • tubal ligation including the Essure procedure
    • permanent sterilization
    • uterine sizing
    • increased training in ultrasonography and anesthesia techniques for office procedures
    • management of termination-related complications
