Medical Student Clerkship

The medical student experience offered by the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women’s Health at the University of Louisville School of Medicine includes the basic third-year clerkship, an elective program for third- and fourth-year students, and an opportunity for first- and second- year students to become acquainted with the specialty through career electives and shadowing experiences. The emphasis is to acquire knowledge and skills that the practicing physician in any primary field will utilize. For students interested in a career in Obstetrics and Gynecology, the program offers several courses beyond the required clerkships and works closely with students through the residency investigation and application process.

The third-year clerkship is a six-week program that includes a mix of didactics and clinical experiences. Interactive lectures, small group sessions, simulation labs, team-based learning experiences, and case studies are incorporated throughout the didactic sessions. Clinical experiences on the clerkship include each of the following 2-week rotations: labor and delivery (day and night), in-patient and out-patient gynecologic surgical experiences, and a private office rotation with a practicing Ob/Gyn physician.

Third- year and fourth-year electives are offered within specialty areas, and as an opportunity for advanced experience as an acting intern in labor and delivery. Students can choose from Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology, Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery, or Gynecologic Oncology for specialty electives.  Prior to graduation an Obstetric and Gynecology 3-week intensive bootcamp is held as well to prepare graduating students for intern year.

An introduction to the specialty can be arranged for first-and second-year students through the “Labor and Delivery Weekend Program,” or "Catch A Baby Program" by a career exploration with one or more attending physicians or shadowing experience with an on-site or gratis faculty member. Interested students may want to attend events sponsored by the Ob/Gyn Interest Club that holds monthly meetings and activities.
