Hyunchul Lee, MBBS, PhD received his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Sydney in 2013, where he also received his Bachelor of Medical Science and his Doctor of Philosophy in neuroscience (thesis title: 'Perineuronal nets and developmental plasticity in the mouse neustriatum'). While pursuing his medical degree, Dr. Lee rotated in neurosurgery at the Royal North Shore Hospital (Sydney) and at the Montreal Neurological Institute (functional and epilepsy service), and graduated with the Dun Surgery Prize for his work in neurosurgery. He also holds a Graduate Diploma in Surgical Anatomy from the University of New England (Armidale, Australia, 2015), and has trained as a surgical resident at the St. George Hospital in Sydney, then as a junior neurosurgery registrar at the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, Australia before joining us at the University of Louisville.

Dr. Lee's research interests include elucidating the role of basal ganglia circuits in how we make decisions and execute them, and in modulating intrinsic systems-level plasticity to restore function to the injured brain and spinal cord. He is also passionate about global health, having served on the surgical team at Mbingo Baptist Hospital in Northwestern Cameroon in 2018 during a time of civil conflict within the region.
