Pulmonary Hypertension

The U of L Pulmonary Hypertension program provides consultative services, information and education for individuals with pulmonary hypertension.

The University of Louisville Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) Program is directed by J. Shaun Smith, D.O., and assisted by Juan Guardiola, M.D., and is the only academic Pulmonary Hypertension program in Kentucky, providing comprehensive assessment and management of patients with all types of pulmonary hypertension. Our specialized team provides 24-hour care for outpatient and urgent inpatient support, providing exceptional care and in-depth assistance for all aspects of this unique disease process.

The program is a collaborative effort between various specialists including Pulmonary, Sleep Medicine, Cardiology, Gastroenterology and Rheumatology. Dedicated pharmacists, nurse educators, respiratory therapists, and home health professionals provide necessary services to individuals living in Louisville, central and western Kentucky, and southern Indiana.

Our program offers consultative and continuing care services, diagnostic testing and treatment, both on an outpatient and inpatient basis at the University of Louisville Hospital, as well as Jewish and Norton Hospitals in downtown Louisville.

To help coordinate the complex care provided to our patients, a Pulmonary Hypertension nurse coordinator and patient advocate works closely with each individual enrolled in our program.

Our program offers the complete spectrum of pulmonary hypertension therapy including:

• Oral, inhalational, subcutaneous & intravenous therapies

• Educational materials

• Right heart catheterization / Vasodilator study

• Dedicated pulmonary hypertension nurse coordinator

Following initial consultation, the referring physician will be contacted to discuss findings and recommendations. Treatment plans and follow-up care are developed through close collaboration with the referring physician.

We also provide assistance with reimbursement and insurance issues, and help connect patients with appropriate medication assistance programs, when needed.
