Lung Transplant

lung transplant buttonUnder the direction of Allan Ramirez, M.D. (Medical Director), Victor van Berkel, M.D., Ph.D.(Surgical Director), and Michael Bousamra, M.D., the program seeks to improve the quality of life of patients with end-stage lung disease by providing state-of-the-art care driven by compassion, grounded in scientific evidence, and supported with innovative research.

Since the 1990s, lung transplants have been performed by UofL cardiothoracic surgeons at UofL Hospital - Jewish Campus. This collaboration recently has been strengthened with the medical directorship of the lung transplant program now being provided by the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Disorders Medicine.

The combined efforts of UofL physicians and UofL Hospital - Jewish Campus transplant coordinators, dietitians, social workers, physical therapists, and other staff enable the lung transplant program to excel in providing attentive care for each patients with end-stage lung disease by providing pre-operative management consultation, assessment for transplantation, and post-operative management.

Our lung transplant program is dedicated to providing expert and personalized care for patients within a setting that also utilizes advanced medical resources of both the University of Louisville and UofL Hospital - Jewish Campus.

The Lung Transplant Program works closely with the UofL specialty pulmonary clinics in cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung disease and pulmonary hypertension in a multidisciplinary fashion to ensure prompt, appropriate referrals for transplant and to optimize prior to transplantation the care of patients enrolled in these programs.
