Welcome to the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Disorders Medicine at the University of Louisville.

Our mission is to deliver excellent, efficient, state-of-the-art and evidence-based medical care to our patients, provide outstanding educational and training opportunities for students, residents and post-graduate trainees, and to promote and foster multi-disciplinary clinical and basic science research programs designed to improve our understanding of human health and disease with the goal of improving quality of life, preserving and restoring respiratory and sleep health.

We do this by first recruiting, retaining, and developing board-certified physicians in pulmonary disease, critical care, and sleep medicine. These experts provide the latest evidence-based treatments for a number of disorders including; asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema, occupational lung disease, pulmonary vascular diseases, interstitial lung diseases, critical care/intensive care medicine, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary infections, tuberculosis, lung cancer (one of Kentucky's largest killers) and common and more complex sleep disorders like sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs syndrome and narcolepsy.

We also believe that a multi-disciplinary approach, one that involves active collaboration with specialists in other fields, can improve your care.

We have particular interests in pulmonary hypertension, cystic fibrosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, asthma/COPD, complex sleep disorders, lung cancer and management of adult respiratory distress syndrome and septic shock. We offer diagnostics, treatment and management, and an education based programmatic approach which is focused on the needs of patients and their families, often times in conjunction with leading-edge research.

Our doctors are also researchers, who publish their ground breaking research in leading edge journals. Their research involves both basic research (done in a traditional laboratory environment) as well as clinical and translational research aimed at improving clinical care and respiratory and sleep health.

Active areas of research include acute lung injury, nutrition in the ICU, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, surfactant replacement therapy in ARDS, pneumonitis following stem cell transplant, COPD, chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, biomarker development in obstructive sleep apnea, asthma, hypoxia, non-surgical lung volume reduction in bullous emphysema, oxidative stress and hypoxia.
