UofL is hosting the “Tamburro Symposium on Environmental Chemicals and Liver Disease” to be held at the University of Louisville on September 11-12, 2014 (Thursday and Friday) in the Clinical and Translational Research Building. This NIH-funded symposium (1R13ES024661-01—Cave) is named in honor of the pioneering work of the late hepatologist, Dr. Carlo Tamburro of the University of Louisville. The Liver is the largest and most complex internal organ in the body. The liver detoxifies xenobiotics and gut-derived toxins. Just as nutrition impacts the pathogenesis and natural history of diseases, exposures to environmental chemicals are important, but understudied cofactors.
This symposium brings together thought leaders in many areas of environmental-induced liver injury and will be a unique opportunity to provide a forum for developing a comprehensive strategy to move the field forward. The conference will encompass five major sessions ("Mechanisms of Liver Injury and Fibrosis," "Hepatic Xenobiotic Metabolism," "Chemical Hepatocarcinogenesis," "Environmental Hepatotoxicants," "Alternative Testing Strategies and Biomarkers," and a wrap-up "Panel Discussion"). Each of the five major sessions will include 4-5 presentations and a round-table discussion. Participants in the symposium include from professors from multiple universities and the EPA. This is an exceptional opportunity to bring together experts in these fields.
