Non-Surgical Patent Ductus

Non-surgical transcatheter closure of openings between large vessels of the heart (the pulmonary artery and aorta), patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is an alternative available to our patients at UofL’s Cardiovascular Adult Structural Heart Disease. By closing these communications we are able to halt the progression of heart failure caused by PDAs as well as preventing cryptogenic strokes that can occur with this defect. One primary synthetic device is currently being used at UofL - the Amplatzer® Ductal Occluder (see right) which provides a very safe and effective alternative to open-heart surgical correction of PDAs.
