Program Goals & Objectives

  • Develop expertise in performing a sports injury/illness history and focused exam, and from that information, form a complete differential diagnosis.
  • Develop and supervise a comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation plan.
  • Gain competence in dealing with common medical problems of sport.
  • Develop knowledge of the use of bracing, splinting and casting.
  • Develop expertise in joint and soft tissue injections.
  • Develop knowledge of the use of physical therapy modalities.
  • Develop teaching skills to further the education of others in the area of sports medicine.
  • Understand the importance of the role of the primary care, sports medicine trained physician in the follow-up evaluation, management, prevention, screening and health maintenance of the competitive and recreational athlete.
  • Serve as team physician, working with athletic trainers in managing musculoskeletal injuries, sports-related issues and concussion.
  • Perform duties of the sideline physician.
  • Be available for consultation with the athletic trainer.
  • Develop expertise in assessing sports-related and general musculoskeletal injuries and developing an appropriate differential diagnosis.
  • Order appropriate radiographic studies to confirm the diagnosis.
  • Understand surgical indications for musculoskeletal injuries.
