Program Director Welcome

Program Director Welcome

Welcome to the University of Louisville Department of Family and Geriatric Medicine’s Residency Program. I am pleased to introduce you to our residency program. We are located in Kentucky’s largest city, Louisville. Our program began in 1971 and our graduates have pursued practices in rural, suburban, and urban areas. Some have entered into academic careers, me included. Our goal is to train excellent Family Physicians who will strive to provide superb care for their patients and become life-long learners.

The program’s training has a unique blend of both academic and community settings. Rotations occur within the University Hospital, Jewish Hospital, Kosair Children’s Hospital, and community offices. The program is structured as an 8-8-8 program accredited by the ACGME, for a total of 24 residents in training annually. Residents see their continuity patients at either our Newburg or Cardinal Station Practices, being equally divided between the two locations.

Rotations are one month in length. We also have longitudinal requirements in Mental/Behavioral Health and Community Medicine. There are two fellowship programs in our department: Sports Medicine and Geriatric Medicine, both of which are ACGME accredited. Our didactics occur at our residency suite located within the Jewish Hospital Rudd Heart and Lung Building. These didactics occur on Thursday afternoons and Grand Rounds are on Friday mornings.

Our faculty is committed to providing high quality teaching; everyone is actively involved with resident training. Our residents are amazing and strive to learn and care for our patients. Our residency division staff is supportive and engaged in every aspect of this training process.

We are proud of our residency. I believe that our program affords a superb education that will produce caring physicians who are dedicated to excellence. I hope you enjoy exploring our website. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to the opportunity to meet you in person!
