History

The first William Ray Moore Endowed Chair, Dr. Gabriel Smilkstein, founded the Division of Humanism within the Department of Family and Geriatric Medicine at the University of Louisville (UofL) in 1992. Dr. David Doukas, the current Moore Chair, founded the Program for Education in Humanism, Ethics, and Professionalism soon after his arrival in 2004. These activities were formally incorporated into the division, which was renamed the Division for Medical Humanism and Ethics in March 2006. The division is responsible for medical humanism and ethics education at the University of Louisville, and serves to maximize future opportunities in education and educational research.
