With the implementation of electronic medical records in 2008, we incorporated teaching the billing side of the practice of Emergency Medicine. Residents are taught documentation guidelines to enhance the capture of financial revenue for services provided. This is an ongoing process throughout the three year residency. As there are constant changes in the medical field, this also applies to documentation requirements. Residents are informed of changes, revisions and updates pertaining to ICD 9 and CPT coding. Whether a patient sustains a minor laceration or suffers Level 1 trauma, we instruct on the elements and components for the documentation for appropriate evaluation and management as well as procedures performed.
Our goal after the completion of the residency is that each resident will have knowledge of the “business of medicine” as they begin their practices.
