Biochemistry of ion transporters; structure and function of membrane proteins

Dr. Dean is studying Ca2+ homeostasis in human platelets. He and his coworkers have established that the platelet plasma membrane calcium pump is inhibited in hypertension leading to increased cytosolic calcium and platelet hyperactivity, thus explaining the link between hypertension and thrombotic events such as heart attack and stroke. In addition, the role of platelet microparticles, membrane fragments released from activated platelets, in vascular disease and cancer is being studied using proteomic and lipidomic approaches.
