UofL Health- Jewish Hospital, a 442-bed regional referral center, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2003. A premier heart hospital in the United States, Jewish Hospital is the site of the world’s first and second implants of the AbioCor® Implantable Replacement Heart. Jewish Hospital is also the only hospital in the country to perform both the totally implantable heart and the totally implantable Left Ventricular Assist System (the Lionheart™).

The Transplant Center - a program of Jewish Hospital and the University of Louisville School of Medicine – is in the elite percentage of organ transplant centers in the nation and one of a handful of hospitals performing all five solid organ transplants. The center was the 12th hospital in the nation to receive Federal Medicare Designation for kidney, liver, lung and heart transplants.

For more than 115 years, Norton Children's Hospital and its predecessor hospitals have provided children of Kentucky and Southern Indiana the best health care available without regard to their families' ability to pay. Norton Children's Hospital is Kentucky's only free-standing, full- service pediatric care facility dedicated exclusively to caring for children and is an advocate for the health and well being of all children. The 263-bed hospital, which also serves as the primary pediatric teaching facility for the University of Louisville School of Medicine, maintains an unwavering dedication to the children of the community and region. Our experienced and dedicated physicians, nurses and staff provide comprehensive, compassionate care to children. In 2007, Norton Children’s Hospital was recognized for excellence in nursing care with a Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Norton Children’s Hospital is the only magnet designated hospital in the city and one of only 20 children’s hospitals recognized in the country.

From 54 hospitals in 1930, VA’s health care system now includes 155 medical centers, with at least one in each state, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia.  VA operates more than 1,400 sites of care, including 872 ambulatory care and community-based outpatient clinics, 135 nursing homes, 45 residential rehabilitation treatment programs, 209 Veterans Centers and 108 comprehensive home-care programs.  VA health care facilities provide a broad spectrum of medical, surgical and rehabilitative care.

VA manages the largest medical education and health professions training program in the United States.  VA facilities are affiliated with 107 medical schools, 55 dental schools and more than 1,200 other schools across the country.  Each year, about 90,000 health professionals are trained in VA medical centers.  More than half of the physicians practicing in the United States had some of their professional education in the VA health care system.  VA’s medical system serves as a backup to the Defense Department during national emergencies and as a federal support organization during major disasters.
