Sample of Pre-med Course Schedule

This is a template exclusively for students currently in the program or prospective applicants to the program. Undergraduates and regular post-bac students should consult with their academic advisor or a pre-med advisor.

Students will meet with the Program Director to arrange a program plan tailor made for them based on course offerings each semester.  Each student's schedule will vary slightly pending whether they are full or part-time and how many pre-med courses they have already taken (0-12 hours).

Students have a full two years to complete the program.  For example, the Fall 2021 cohort will consist of the following semesters;

  • Fall 2021, Spring 2022 and Summer 2022 (Year 1)
  • Fall 2022 - Spring 2023 (Year 2).

Please Note: The schedule below is a sample of a course load that is primarily full-time during the first year of the program.  It is not mandatory that you take this particular course load.

The schedule will vary due to the following circumstances:

  • If the student has already taken some pre-med courses or still needs to complete an English requirement.
  • If the student needs an introductory course (e.g., Chemistry 101 -Introduction to Chemistry) before taking the required pre-med course.

Students are to take a minimum of 6 credit hours each semester, except during the summer terms or if they have less than six credit hours remaining to complete. The summer term is optional. Each student will have an individualized plan based on their availability and preferred course load.

First Year of the Program

The schedule below does not include any missing English requirements, assuming that they were completed with your Bachelor’s degree. If you have not taken the required English course (s), please add it to the fall semester of the second year of the program.

Summer Term Options

Please note: Taking courses during the summer is optional. During the summer semesters, students are encouraged to take only one class per term. Usually there are three terms offered, however most pre-med level science courses are offered during the second and third term sequentially.  Classes are taught at an accelerated pace.

ASSURED ADMISSION
You may apply for assured admission during the first summer of the program if you have completed or will have at least 24-30 hours of pre-med course work completed by the end of  the fall semester prior to the year you wish to enter medical school with the required GPA.
The MCAT for assured admission consideration is due by April 30 of the year you want to matriculate to medical school.

MCAT PREPARATION
If you’re applying to additional medical schools, in addition to assured admission during the first year of the program, you will need to take the MCAT the year before you want to matriculate to medical school. You need organic chemistry 1 for the MCAT. If you take organic chemistry 1 during the summer in order to take the MCAT, you will need  to include ample time to prepare.

Summer - Term II

Please note:  Students who are preparing for the MCAT usually only take the Organic Chemistry Lecture 1 during the second term.  They usually will take the Organic Chemistry 2 lecture in the fall. The U of L School of Medicine no longer requires the Organic Chemistry labs. However, Biochemistry is now required.

Please note: If the student is accepted to the University of Louisville School of Medicine via assured admission or the general applicant pool, they will begin medical school in August. If the student is not accepted through assured admission, the general applicant pool or by another medical school; they can reapply to medical school as a regular applicant. Their glide year can be used to take some additional upper level science courses or retake the MCAT if necessary.  Our services are still available to assist for re-application.
