Inclusion and Diversity: A Lesson from Dr. Seuss - March 16, 2016

Inclusion and Diversity: A Lesson from Dr. Seuss

Presented by Dave McIntosh

The SMART program for March will be presented by Dr. Dave McIntosh, Associate Dean for Urban Health Innovation and Chief Diversity Officer for the School of Medicine.

While often labeled as buzz-words or lumped in with political correctness, the ideas of diversity and inclusion are important and have a great deal of research that demonstrates attention to these issues can have a dramatic impact on the work and lives of people.  In this session we will draw from the wisdom of Dr. Seuss as a starting point for understanding the nature of implicit bias, and build on these concepts to discuss how we can all be part of creating a space where all people regardless of their identity characteristics feel included, welcomed, and supported.  While this session will describe the published research on diversity and inclusion, time will also be spent to help participants understand the value of individual efforts in ensuring inclusion.
