What is SMART?

In October 2014, the University of Louisville School of Medicine launched a new program for staff employed in the medical school and by University of Louisville Physicians to promote staff development, camaraderie, and communication. The School of Medicine Advancement, Retention, and Training (SMART) program is sponsored by the Dean of the School of Medicine, Dr. Toni Ganzel, and is designed to engage staff in professional and personal development efforts through a number of new initiatives such as mentoring, professional development, community outreach and engagement, recognition and reward, wellness, and a staff retreat. Recurring monthly programs are offered for staff enrichment and a number of programs including a book read group, external training, and internal internship opportunities are designed to engage staff in a variety of ways. Staff are also engaged in exploration of opportunities as well as finding solutions to operational challenges. SMART also encourages staff to learn more about the operation of the other units that support achievement of the School’s mission. The staff employed in the School of Medicine and University of Louisville Physicians are committed, hardworking, and capable. The SMART Program is designed to stimulate, motivate, and encourage continued innovation, organizational cohesion and commitment to the mission, vision, and goals of the School of Medicine and University of Louisville Physicians.
