Course Description
This one day CME course on peri-operative critical events will offer lectures in the morning and hands on practice with simulation based learning in the afternoon. Participants will learn how to manage perioperative critical events as individuals as well as working as a team. This includes management of difficult airway, hypoxia, hemodynamic instability including cardiac arrest and hypertension. The participants will also learn, emergency intravenous access (intraosseous and central venous catheter insertion), cannot intubate - cannot ventilate (surgical airway), bronchoscopy, chest tube placement and many more skills.
Target Audience
The target audience for this seminar includes Medical Doctors (MD), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA), Registered Nurses (RN), Respiratory Therapists, Emergency Medical Service (EMS) providers and all others interested in the topics presented.

Learning Objectives:
As a result of participating in this activity, participants should be able to:
1. Describe that the airway management in acutely ill patients (Operative rooms, intensive care unit and emergency rooms) is different than normal patients undergoing elective surgery. Recognize that these patients have higher incidence of difficult airway. Their respiratory and cardiac functions are mostly compromised. Their body reserve is very little. Identify the right skills and plan required to secure airway in these patients.
2. Recognize that among these patients, once airway is secured, oxygenation can be another big issue. Identify that if oxygenation (breathing) is not corrected in timely fashion, these patient can go into multiple organ failure very quickly with a poor outcome. Report the list of complications that may occur in this set of patients during intubation and oxygenation.
3. Plan, manage, and appreciate knowledge and skills required for a) basic and advanced airway management; b) oxygenation (breathing) and (c) circulation.
4. Display timely but appropriate application of knowledge and communications skills acquired during lectures. This will be achieved in the afternoon during workshops using human airway anatomy and physiology simulators.
