Scholars and Service

Every year, McConnell Scholars give back to the Louisville and campus community through service projects. One annual event has always been "LG&E Project Warm," which matches volunteers to homes in the Louisville community where heating bills are too high. Scholars help weatherize the home and educate residents about how to reduce their heat bill.

"During we visited two houses. The first was a trailer park in Shelbyville. Although the home looked was worn down on the outside, it was warm and cozy on the inside. We were greeted by a nice woman and her two children. The work went quickly as we soon got down the pattern of how to winterize the windows, and Hannah and Becky's prior experience came in very handy.
The next home was a small two bedroom home off of Dixie Highway. Inside the home lived an elderly couple who were eating breakfast as we arrived. Despite the earliness of the day, they were in bright spirits. We quickly fixed up work from previous years that needed repair, and were on our way back to the base at LG&E.
Overall, it was a wonderful day to do service and a socioeconomic awakening. Being blessed students at the University of Louisville, it's easy to forget that poverty exists right on our back porch. I learned a lot from the experience about the struggles individuals have in the city of Louisville, and definitely will participate in Project Warm again."
