Lincoln Society

Abraham LincolnThe McConnell Center is dedicated to ensuring that its students are informed, not only on the current political and social issues, but also ensuring an understanding of the origins of those issues. Therefore, in commemoration of the centennial of Lincoln's birth, the McConnell Center has formed a Lincoln Society dedicated to learning about the life and times of our sixteenth President.

The McConnell Scholars who chose to become members of this society participated in several ediying events. They read a biography of Lincoln in preparation for a trip to Lincoln's birthplace in Hodgenville, whre they held a discussion on Lincoln's life. The Scholars also hosted a public panel discussion on Lincoln's legacy that was wildly successfull with those in attendance.

In addition to these student lead discussions, a number of experts presented both public and private lectures and seminars to the members of the Lincoln Society. These included political scientist Dr. Marshall DeRosa, historian Dr. Thomas Mackey, and Pulitzer Prize winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin, dellivered a lecture on her book, Team of Rivals. As the first year of the Lincoln Society is coming to a close, it is clear that a continuation of the past successes will mean a very positive second year for the McConnell Scholars' Lincoln Society.
