Kentucky middle and high school students are invited to submit videos and essays about their favorite American hero as part of a summer contest sponsored by the McConnell Center's Civic Education Program.

The Center recently placed its book series online for free download to support teachers and students looking for digital enrichment activities.

One of the books, Hero Tales from American History (download PDF of entire book)was written by Theodore Roosevelt and Henry Cabot Lodge. U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and McConnell Center Director Gary Gregg co-wrote the introduction.

Originally published in 1895, the book highlights 26 stories of heroism selected by Lodge and Roosevelt for individuals' bravery supporting their families, communities and country.

Awards will be given to top submissions in both middle school and high school categories. Winners will receive an honorary plaque, the opportunity to appear as guests on the McConnell Center Podcast and a copy of Hero Tales signed by Sen. McConnell and Dr. Gregg. Additionally, winning students' social studies teachers will receive a printed copy of all of the McConnell Center's educational resources for their classroom.

The competition deadline is July 31. Contact , McConnell Center civic education coordinator, for more information.
