Aaron Vance (’17) has been elected president of the University of Louisville student government for the 2016-17 school year.

Vance, of Vine Grove, Ky., is the sixth McConnell Scholar elected to the position, succeeding fellow Scholar Victoria Allen (’16), who is finishing her tenure as president. Other Scholars who served as UofL student body president include Bill Brammell ('06), Rudy Spencer ('09), Kurtis Frizzell ('11) and Justin Brandt ('13).

Vance won 75 percent of the vote in last week’s campus-wide election, campaigning on platforms including increased student advocacy related to rising tuition costs, increased efforts to streamline student services, increased student input on campus renovations and new developments and increased participation in and diversity of student organizations.

“It's a great honor to have the support and confidence of my peers to work to better our university. I'm excited at the opportunities that this year will present us and the impact that I, along with my administration, will be able to make,” said Vance, a political science major at UofL with minors in economics and anthropology.

Vance is a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity and is the current chief of staff for the Student Government Association.

Other McConnell Scholars voted to student government positions for next academic year include Landon Lauder (’17), Easton Depp (’19) and Georgiana “Georgie” Sook (’19). All three were elected senators for the UofL College of Arts and Sciences.

Lauder, of Russell, Ky., is majoring in political science and psychology with a minor in social change and a certificate in peace, justice and conflict transformation. He is an Honors Scholar and former student senator for the college. He is a 2013 graduate of Russell Independent High School.

Depp, of Ft. Thomas, Ky., studies political science at UofL and is a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He graduated from Highlands High School in 2015.

Sook, of Owensboro, Ky., is a 2015 graduate of Daviess County High School. She studies political science and English and is a member of Kappa Delta sorority at UofL.
