University of Louisville President James Ramsey recognized McConnell Scholar Kevin Grout (’16) as “Mr. Cardinal” Monday night at the UofL basketball game.

“It is a true honor to receive this award,” Grout said. “I’m so thankful to UofL for giving me numerous opportunities and organizations to further my intellectual growth, to build life-long friendships and to explore the world during these past four years.”

The award, given to an outstanding senior male student at UofL, recognizes leadership, scholarship and service to the university.

Amanda Allen, of Louisville, was named the 2016 “Ms. Cardinal.”

Grout, of Florence, Ky., is majoring in history and political science with a minor economics. His honors thesis, under the direction of UofL history professor Thomas Mackey, PhD, considers the Exceptions Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

In addition to being an active member of the McConnell Scholars Program, Grout serves as the student body’s political coordinator and director of the Cards In Action advocacy program.

Grout is the treasurer of the Kentucky Federation of College Republicans and is the philanthropy chair of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity at UofL.

He is a graduate of St. Henry District High School.
