Smith, a native of Elizabethtown, Ky., and Young, a native of Louisville, Ky., have been selected as two of six summer legislative interns for US Sen. Mitch McConnell's Washington, DC, office.

According to the senator’s website, internships are designed to facilitate firsthand knowledge of the Congressional process. As legislative interns, Smith's and Young's duties will include drafting responses to constituent requests and researching current legislation. Smith and Young will also lead regular tours of the Capitol for visiting constituents.

"Interning on the Hill is something I've wanted to do since I first visited DC years ago, and I'm excited to be in the nation's capital during an election year," Smith said.

"I'm looking forward to gaining valuable leadership and perspective through this experience," Young said. "I'm very grateful to the McConnell Scholars Program for preparing us for opportunities like this internship," she added.

Smith and Young follow other McConnell Scholars who have interned in Sen. McConnell's office, including Sean Southard ('15) and Meghan Waters ('14).
