The McConnell Center recently “adopted” a platoon of the Third Brigade, First Infantry Division of the US Army based out of Fort Knox, Ky., and currently stationed in Afghanistan at Forward Operating Base Apache. Cpt. Jordan Glover (McConnell Scholar ‘06) is a helicopter pilot serving in that platoon.

"We adopted this platoon to show our men and women in uniform that American citizens support them in their deployment overseas," said Ben Whitlock (McConnell Scholar '15), of Greensburg, Ky, who is spearheading a year-long project to assemble letters, food, hygiene products and other necessary goods for Glover's platoon. "We acknowledge that those who volunteer for military service are special individuals who put their lives on hold to defend our nation. We simply want to say 'thank you,'"

America’s armed forces traditionally mark their unit service with commemorative challenge coins. The McConnell Center invites the public to help in honoring our armed forces by offering commissioned coins to 1,000 soldiers.

Each $3.50 donation purchases one coin for one soldier in the Third Brigade, First Infantry Division. The McConnell Center seeks to raise at least $3,500 to thank our troops.

"We know the people of Kentucky join us in supporting our soldiers overseas. We ask for you to join us by purchasing at least one coin to honor a soldier as he or she returns home from Afghanistan in the next few months," said Gary Gregg, director of the McConnell Center.
