Moot Court Teams Wins Regional Competition- Advanced to Nationals

SAVANNAH, Georgia- Participating in the Southeast Kirk Laughlin Moot Court Team 2008Undergraduate Regional Moot Court Competition, the McConnell Scholars Moot Court Team of the University of Louisville faced off against teams from Patrick Henry, Lyons College, Liberty College, and the University of North Carolina. Moot Court is a simulation of an appellate court proceeding.

On the first day of competition, Team Charlie Andrew Carroll Moot Court Team 2008Helms/Katlin Rust, Andrew Carroll/Kirk Laughlin and Brad Atzinger/Katie Miller went through three rounds and finished 6-3 over the nine rounds that U of L faced that day. Teams Carroll/Laughlin and Atzinger/Miller were invited back to play in the Sweet 16 Tournament the next day.

Team Atzinger/Miller surprised the competition with a number one seed going into the competition, while team Carroll/Laughlin came in as a seven seed. During the tournament, team Atzinger/Miller went up in the first round against Lyons College, moving on to the elite eight.  

The Elite Eight

In the Elite Eight, team Atzinger/Miller went up against Patrick Henry and came up short; however, their performance over the course of the competition earned them an automatic berth to the national competition in January.

Team Carroll/Laughlin beat the team from Liberty College, advancing to the Elite Eight to face off against

Patrick Henry. The Cardinals won and advanced to the Final Four to face off against UNC-Chapel Hill.

The Final Four

In the Final Four, team Carroll/Laughlin fought hard and snuck by with the victory, advancing the Regional Championship Game. Facing off against another UNC squad, the Cardinals defeated the Tarheels, earning themselves the Regional District Championship.

Both teams Brad Atzinger/Katie Miller and Andrew Carroll/Kirk Laughlin have been invited to participate in the National Undergraduate Moot Court Championship in Orange County, California on January 16-17, 2009.

Thanks are in order to Coach Neil Salyer, Dr. Thomas Mackey, Ms. Tina Talley, Dr. Gary Gregg, and the previous year’s coach, Ms. Mary Hora, for all of their efforts to build the Moot Court Team into the powerhouse they are today.
