Major General Jefforey SmithJoin Major General Jefforey A. Smith, commanding general of the U.S. Army Cadet Command and Ft. Knox, as he discusses leadership lessons from military combat. Smith served on Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, among other missions.

Smith is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College and holds a master's degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. His significant awards and decorations include three Defense Superior Service Medals, two Legions of Merit, three Bronze Star Medals, six Meritorious Service Medals, Humanitarian Service Medal, Office of the Secretary of Defense Identification Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge (with Star), Expert Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge and Ranger Tab.

Major General Jefforey Smith's Military Experience

Smith was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Infantry through Ohio State University's ROTC program, entering active military duty in 1983.

His Army career began with 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C., where he led two platoons and served as a company executive officer and battalion air operations officer, including deployment for Multinational Force and Observers peacekeeping mission in the Sinai peninsula in Egypt to observe the Treaty of Peace between Egypt and Israel.

Smith then served as a rifle company commander in 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), including deployment for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He later served as a battalion and brigade operations officer in the 25th Infantry Division, including deployment for Operation Marathon Pacific in Wake Island.

From 1999-2001, Smith commanded 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), including deployment for Operation Joint Guardian in Kosovo. Following battalion command, he served as the deputy chief of staff for operations, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).

Smith commanded 3rd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division leading the brigade combat team in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following brigade command, he served as the executive officer to Commander, United States Central Command (General John P. Abizaid).

From 2010-2011, Smith served as the Assistant Commanding General for Police Development, NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan/Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan, Operation Enduring Freedom.
