UofL's Strategic Broadening Seminar Class of 2016

UofL president James Ramsey and McConnell Center Director Gary Gregg congratulated and bestowed challenge coins to the third class of UofL’s SBS graduates. U.S. Army Col. Sue Bryant, Chief of Staff of the Army’s Strategic Studies Group, and Pentagon representative Robert MacMullen, deputy division chief for Headquarters Department of the Army G/3/5/7, served as keynote speakers for the event.

UofL’s SBS is administered by the McConnell Center in partnership with the university’s office of military initiatives. The 28-day course is designed for mid-career soldiers to expand their horizons on strategic issues while honing their professional development skills through research-intensive, small-group projects. Soldiers earn more than 150 hours of professional development leadership credit.

U.S. Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Papa John’s founder and CEO John Schnatter and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer visited the soldiers during this year’s program, discussing leadership lessons in local and national governance, as well as corporate management. Other highlights included visits to Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, the Ford Truck Assembly and Moonshine University.

The program culminated with a strategic capstone team project, consisting of a team presentation and academic paper, demonstrating the students' application of the curriculum. Students presented their findings before a panel including Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Snow, commanding general of the U.S. Army Recruiting Command, Bryant and MacMullen.
