An essay by Roberts Works, a 2010 graduate of the McConnell Scholars Program, was recently published in an online journal.

The Center for Asian Democracy at the University of Louisville hosted an international conference last January entitled "Democratization in America." About 100 scholars from all over the world came to Louisville to present their research.

Robert Works, of Independence, was the only undergraduate student to present at the conference. His essay, entitled "The Emerging Power: How International and Civilian Organizations Define Chinese Policy," has recently been published in the Virginia Review of Asian Studies.

"This is very remarkable," said Dr. Shiping Hua, Director of the Center for Asian Democracy. Last year, Hua directed a "Chinese Culture and Politics" seminar for several McConnell Scholars, including Works, that culminated in a month-long study abroad to Beijing.

Works is currently studying at El Colegio de México in Mexico City. He was awarded an Ambassadorial Scholarship for 2010-2011 by the Rotary Foundation to support his academic study abroad.

Works was a political science and Spanish double major at the University of Louisville and was named an "outstanding graduate" from the College of Arts and Sciences.
