"We are glad to be at the center of UofL's efforts to remind the American citizenry of our rich and essential constitutional heritage," said Gary L. Gregg, director of the McConnell Center. The following events are part of the McConnell Center's celebration of the 39 men who signed the U.S. Constitution in 1787.
Sept. 17: Celebrate with Cupcakes (open to the public)
Cupcakes and beverages will be available free of charge beginning at 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 17, on the second floor of the Student Activities Center.
Sept. 20-23: Alumni Conference - Federalist, Anti-Federalist debates (McConnell Scholar alumni)
Fifteen McConnell Scholar graduates will consider The Federalist Papers by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Jay, which defends the Constitution, and an equal selection of Anti-Federalist writings against the Constitution.
"In interesting ways, we will be recreating the core debates that roiled the nation in 1787-1788, and which continue to resonate the halls of government today," said Gregg, who developed the conference and will serve as discussion leader. The four-day conference is co-sponsored with the Liberty Fund, Inc.
Sept. 28: Propose a Constitutional Amendment, win up to $300 (UofL students only)
UofL students are eligible to compete for scholarship awards ($300 for first place; $200 for second; $100 for third). The winning submission will have demonstrated a historical need for the proposed amendment as well as its relevance. Materials must be submitted online by Sept. 28. (Additional information)
