The prestigious McConnell Scholarships are reserved for 10 Kentucky graduating high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding leadership potential. Scholarships are renewable.
McConnell Scholars are guaranteed full tuition scholarships to the University of Louisville. In addition, each scholar will receive all-expenses paid trips to Washington, D.C., and a five-week study abroad to the People's Republic of China.
Successful applicants will become members of the McConnell Scholars Program, a premier educational enrichment opportunity to develop leadership skills, meet top political leaders, take part in liberal arts seminars and "great book" discussions, intern in Washington, D.C., and study abroad to the People's Republic of China. Past participants have met world leaders including two sitting U.S. presidents, two U.S. Supreme Court justices, six Secretaries of State, numerous U.S. Senators ambassadors and leaders of foreign nations.
There are now more than 150 successful McConnell Scholar Alumni who serve as mentors to active scholars. McConnell alumni have enjoyed successful careers in politics, education, law, medicine, business and the military. Several have also been awarded prestigious scholarships including the Harry S. Truman Scholarship and Fulbright and Rotaract international scholarships.
U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell and the University of Louisville established the program in 1991, noting the need for "Kentucky's best and brightest to stay in Kentucky."
