ILLiad is the electronic system you use to request an item through Interlibrary Loan. The name ILLiad can be thought of as an acronym for InterLibrary Loan i nternet accessible database.

What is the difference between Interlibrary Loan materials and University of Louisville Libraries' materials?
Interlibrary Loan materials come from different libraries around the world. As a result, they decide if we can borrow their materials, and they set the due date, renewal status, and fines and fees for their materials. To maintain a positive working relationship with other libraries around the world, we have to abide by their rules. If we do not abide by lending library rules, we damage our reputation as a borrowing library, which makes it harder to receive the materials that you want.

Do I use my ULink user id and password to access ILLiad?
No. Your ULink user id and password are different from your ILLiad username and password. You do not automatically get an ILLiad account when you receive your ULink account and are accepted into the University Community. It is a separate service. To sign up for an ILLiad account, click here.

Are there any fines or fees associated with using ILLiad?

The University Libraries do not charge patrons to use the interlibrary loan service. Kornhauser Health Sciences, Ekstrom and Dwight Anderson Music libraries participate in a number of resource sharing agreements with other libraries, and utilizes these libraries first for obtaining articles and loans for free. However, not all materials are available for free through interlibrary loan. Ekstrom and Kornhauser Health Sciences Library will pay the first $20 toward an interlibrary loan item. In the event an item costs more than $20 the patron will be notified with the opportunity to cover the additional costs.

For Ekstrom Library Patrons if your ILL items are overdue by a month, a non-refundable $25 overdue fee will be applied to your account per item. If we receive overdue or replacement charges from the lending library for items in your possession, you are responsible for paying these fees in addition to the $25 nonrefundable fee.

How many renewals do I receive with ILLiad?
The paper band on the cover of your item will indicate yes or no to renewals. If no, you may not renew the item. If yes, you can renew on-line (click here for instructions), over the phone or in person. Renewals are processed by the lending library -- not the University of Louisville Library system. If the lending library denies a renewal the item should be returned immediately

Is security a problem if I use a public workstation?
Yes. Web browsers store information and create a history file on the local workstation. This allows a subsequent user of the workstation to access the system under your name using the browser's Back button to recall a page from the cache, or by finding a page with your personal information in the browser's history file. If you are concerned about the security of your interlibrary loan requests, you can take the following steps:
  1. Access ILLiad only from your personal computer or an otherwise secure workstation.
  2. Access ILLiad from a public workstation in the library. These computers are supervised by the library staff
  3. When using a public access workstation:
    • You cannot delete from the history file those pages that contain your personal information.
    • If the web broswer asks you to save your Interlibrary Loan login information, click "not now" or "never for this site."
    • Exit the Web browser before you leave the workstation. This prevents the Back button from accessing the pages you were using.
