Speaking Out Project Form

The Speaking Out project documents the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) experience at the University of Louisville, past and present, by collecting the narratives of students, faculty, staff, and allies in the University community. Submissions to the project will be made publicly available for viewing in the University Archives and Records Center. A portion of these submissions will also be made available through the University of Louisville Libraries Digital Collections web site.

If you have any questions about this form or the Speaking Out project in general, please contact the project director, Chad Owen, at the University Archives (chad.owen@louisville.edu or 852-6674).

Please consider answering a few demographic questions so that future users of the narratives can pinpoint stories that most match their interests. You may choose to answer any, all, or none of these demographic questions.

Narrative

Tell Us Your Story:

The project organizers encourage you to tell your own story, in your own words, to any level of detail with which you are comfortable (the box below will also expand if needed, so don't feel limited by the space you see).

In order to protect the privacy of individuals mentioned in the narrative, any submissions posted to the web site will first be screened by project staff, and any personal identifiers will be changed. To help us in this process, we ask that you not include information that could be used to identify individuals in the narratives, such as names or specific places.

To help give you ideas, we offer the following possible questions to consider. These are meant to be suggestions only, meant to guide those who might desire it, not to be considered survey questions.

  • Were you out while at UofL? Were you involved in the LGBT community, or other campus organizations?
  • What was your experience at UofL, given how out you were at the time? Were there particular experiences that stand out, positive or negative?
  • What was the climate on campus for the LGBT community?
  • What resources, formal or informal, were available for the LGBT community?
  • Are there campus events that you recall that involved the LGBT community?

Please feel free to be as brief or as detailed as you like, and thank you for your willingness to share your story with others!

Attaching Files (optional):

We welcome pictures, videos, and other documents, up to 800kb. Please note that due to copyright law, we can only accept items that you created or that you have been assigned copyright ownership in the online community collection. If you have problems uploading your files, or if you have more than three items to contribute, please contact the project director.

Please give us a brief description of the images or other material you are uploading. This will help us make it easier for people to find your pictures, videos, etc. For example, if you are submitting pictures from a Pride event in 2009, please provide the name of the event, and the date, if possible. If possible, explain the significance of the attached file to your narrative.

If you have non-digital materials that you would like to donate to the project, please contact the University Archives.

Out of respect for the privacy of others, please make every possible effort to obtain permission of all identifiable persons in photographs before submitting them.
