How do I find films (DVD and VHS) at Ekstrom Library?
The Ekstrom Library as well as the Music and Art Libraries have video holdings. The Ekstrom Library has two distinct collections, the Ekstrom Video Collection which has over 4500 titles and the SGA (Student Government Association) Video Collection, which has over 2400 items.

How do I find films using the Library Catalog?
To determine if the Ekstrom Library has a particular film you should use Minerva, the catalog. Within the catalog you can limit your searching to only videorecordings, subject matter, specific libraries, country of origin, language of film, and actors or directors.

How to use Minerva to browse for videos

  • Use Advanced Search
  • In the first box use one or more terms (don’t forget to select all, any or as a phrase).  One term will give you more hits.
  • In the second box use the word “videorecording”

For example, to search for videos on class and race:

Will give you the following results:

Browse Videos by Library of Congress Classification
Another example: search for videos in the area of African American history, such as Eyes on the Prize which has the call number Video E 185.61.E94

  • Use advanced search again, but this time add the first part of the call number classification you want to browse, E185
  • Use the word “videorecording” in the second box.

Other tips:

Want to see what we have on DVD from the Criterion Collection(over 220 titles)? Just use the terms “Criterion” and “videorecording” in your advanced search. Just ask for them at the desk by title.

How do I check out a film?

To check out films from the Ekstrom Library there are a few things you need to know. First you must have a valid Cardinal Card. You also need to know what borrowing privileges you have. If you have any overdue or lost items on your account you may not be able to check out video materials.

The SGA collection is located infront of the Media Resources department. Just select a title , bring it to the Media Resources desk and we will insert the DVD and charge it to your account. You can charge 3 SGA videos for 5 days.

If you need a title from the Ekstrom Collection, look up the call number using Minerva and ask someone at the Media Resources desk to retrieve it for you. Then they will charge it to your library account. Items out of the Ekstrom Collection circulate for 3 days.

How do I place an item on hold or reserve?

Holds

A hold is what you want if you want to make sure that an item is available when you need it for your class. We place items on hold for up to one year. We highly recommend placing items on hold as soon as you know you will need it. We only have one copy of most of our items so the first person who requests a hold will be the one who receives it.

To place a hold on an item you can either come to the Media Resources desk and fill out a paper hold form or use the electronic hold form.

Reserve

A reserve is when you place an item at the Media Resources Desk for your students to watch within the Library. Reserve items are checked out for 4 hours and must remain inside the library. Your students will need a valid Cardinal Card to use any items placed on reserve. We will place any video materials on reserve as long as it follows the course reserve policies.

To place a course reserve you can either fill out a course reserve form at the Media Resources Desk or use the electronic reserve form.

Do you have audiobooks?
Here at the Ekstrom Library we do not have any audiobooks, or books on tape. However, locally the Louisville Free Public Library, LFPL has a large collection of titles at various branches as well as downloadable titles.

How do I make a donation to the SGA Collection?
To make a donation to the SGA collection just bring the items to any staff member and we will add them to the collection. We only request only films, documentaries, and television shows please.
