Lee Pennington, former Kentucky poet laureate, donated his personal papers to the University of Louisville in 2011. The following year he decided to donate his extensive collections of books and artifacts, and to provide funding for the Lee and Joy Pennington Cultural Heritage Gallery in Ekstrom Library. The new gallery will provide secure, climate controlled housing and exhibition space for the university’s primary source and research materials covering a range of disciplines.
Pennington has published more than 1,300 poems in periodicals worldwide and in numerous poetry collections. He is a published playwright, journalist and has produced twenty-three films documenting the culture and folklore of diverse populations around the globe.
"Lee Pennington and his late wife Joy have devoted their lives and careers to securing the heritage of diverse cultures through folklore studies and film documentary as well as through their own creative work," says Dean of Libraries Robert E. Fox, Jr. "The new Lee and Joy Pennington Cultural Heritage Gallery will continue their legacy by preserving the unique documents and collections donors entrust to us."
