Planning a Visit to the University of Louisville Archives & Records Center

Special Note, Summer 2011

Beginning May 9, 2011, the University Archives & Records Center's reading room will undergo renovations. UARC will be open during the renovations, which are expected to take six weeks, but because space will be limited, researchers are advised to contact us prior to visiting. UARC can be reached by telephone at (502) 852-6674 and by emailemail.

Before You Visit

In order maximize the efficiency of your visit, you may wish to search Minerva, the libraries' catalog in order to determine whether we have materials that may assist you in your research. In addition, our online finding aids, available through the Kentuckiana Digital Library provide information on many of our collections. Because some of our materials (including most of our oral histories) are not cataloged, you also may wish to contact the University Archives and Records Center prior to your visit in order to explore other materials. The UARC staff can be contacted by telephone (502 852-6674) or fax (502 852-6673); you may also email UARC staffemail.

You may also wish to visit other area institutions in the same trip, particularly if you are coming from out of town. The Filson Historical Society, for example, also holds papers that are relevant to Louisville history, and the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives is located in Frankfort, which is approximately one hour from Louisville. For more information on and links to these repositories, please see our Information on Other Archives and Historical Societies page.

If you are seeking University records under the Kentucky Open Records Act, you must observe the KORL procedures as outlined in our pages on the Inspection of University Records by the Public.

Parking on Campus

The University of Louisville has limited visitor parking available in its Floyd Street garage. The garage is located next to the Swain Student Activities Center, on South Floyd near the corner of East Brandeis Avenue, and offers metered parking at $1 per hour. In addition, the city offers long-term (up to 10 hours) metered parking along Floyd Street near the Floyd Street garage.

Meals During Your Visit

The Ekstrom Library, which houses the University Archives and Records Center, also houses the Tulip Tree Cafe, which offers Heine Brothers coffee, baked goods and sandwiches. The Tulip Tree Cafe is located on the first floor of Ekstrom Library, near the Third Street entrance. The Swain Student Activities Center houses several fast food restaurants.

UARC's Hours

The University Archives and Records Center is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. We are closed on university holidays, including the week between Christmas and New Year's Day.
