Finding Materials in Other Repositories

There are several union catalogs researchers will want to search for listings of archival material.

  • The Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives (KDLA) has combined records from over 300 Kentucky repositories with the State Archives' catalog to form a new online catalog. Many of the records from Kentucky repositories were formerly found in the Catalog of Kentucky Archival and Manuscript Collections.
  • WorldCat contains records from OCLC member libraries worldwide (This link is accessible for the U of L community. Consult your local library on how to use WorldCat if you are not part of the U of L community.)
  • Archives USA provides collection descriptions from participating repositories across the United States (This link is accessible for the U of L community).

Genealogical Sources

  • The Filson Historical Society
  • Sons of the American Revolution (SAR)'s national headquarters, located in Louisville, includes its Historical and Genealogical Research Library.
  • Louisville Free Public Library's main branch.
  • The Louisville Genealogical Society also has a small library, and they will do limited research for out-of-town members. They also offer various programs relating to genealogy and local history.
  • Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives and Kentucky Historical Society may be contacted for tips on how to conduct genealogical research in general, and instructions how to send queries by mail to them. Both KDLA and the KHS accept remote research requests only by mail, not by e-mail or phone. Both repositories charge fees for all requests by mail, with varying rates for in-state and out of state researchers.
  • The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) has a Family History Center located at 1000 S. Hurstbourne Parkway, Louisville, KY 40222, (502) 426-8174.
