What We Have and What We Do

The University Archives & Records Center is both a repository for collections documenting the Louisville community and the "Memory of the University." (Our mission is described in greater detail in our Mission and Goals statement.) The University Archives & Records Center, or UARC, was founded in 1973.

Located on the fourth floor of Ekstrom Library, UARC has more than 11,000 linear feet of University records, personal papers, and records of other organizations. UARC also holds a collection of over 2,000 oral history interviews, as well as microfilms of collections and newspapers held elsewhere. In addition, the Archives has a substantial vertical files collection which contains clippings, pamphlets and newsletters documenting various individuals, organizations, events and other subjects relevant to the University and the community. UARC also has a significant collection of reference materials that complement our primary source holdings. For more information on our collections, visit our Collection Description page, or search Minerva - the catalog for catalog entries for UARC holdings.

In order to facilitate the use of these materials, the University Archives and Records Center has microfilm and microfiche readers and printers, audiotape players, and a photocopier, all of which may be used in the UARC research room. In addition, some materials, from photographs and maps to oral histories, are available online via the Libraries' Digital Collections. Reference assistance is available in person, by telephone or fax, and by emailemail.

The University Archives & Records Center is also the official custodian of the records of the University of Louisville and administers the application of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) at the University of Louisville. For more information about inspecting public records at UofL, visit the Inspection of Records Under the Kentucky Open Records Act section of our Website. For more information on FERPA and UofL's FERPA policies, please see the Student Privacy section of this site.
