Biography

Herman Landau was born April 12, 1911 in Louisville, KY. Landau enlisted in the army during World War II, and wrote about his experiences while serving. Upon returning to Louisville, he wrote for both the Courier-Journal and the Louisville Times. Landau was very active in the Jewish community in Louisville serving as leader of the Jewish Social Service Agency, the Jewish Family and Vocational Service, and the Jewish Community Federation. Through Landau's involvement with the Jewish Community Center he conducted extensive research on local Jewish heritage. In 1961 he published Adath Louisville: The Story of a Jewish Community. Landau occasionally published articles up until his death on December 28, 2006.

Brief Description of the Collection

The collection primarily contains files Landau put together during his research on Louisville's Jewish community spanning from the 1950s to the 1990s.

This collection is organized into five series. Series One consists of biographical and personal information about Herman Landau. Series Two is made up of Landau's literary output including articles, correspondence, and manuscript for his book Adath Louisville: The Story of a Jewish Community. Series Three consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence. Series Four consists of topical reference files documenting social events, fundraising campaigns, religious holiday activities, and events of local Jewish organizations and publications, in alphabetical order. Series Five consists of biographical files arranged alphabetically by last name. These files contain mainly photographs, but there are also news clippings, brochures, and a small bit of correspondence. Oversized material has been separated from each series and stored in the last box of the collection.
