Biographical Note

Karl J. Holzknecht was a Louisville native who graduated from Male High School. He received his bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Louisville in 1920. Holzknecht received his master’s degree (1920) and doctorate (1923) in English from the University of Pennsylvania. He worked as an English professor at the University of Louisville from 1923 to 1929. He became an instructor at Washington Square College of New York University from 1929 to 1956. Holzknecht specialized in Shakespearean studies and is the author of Backgrounds of Shakespeare’s Plays (1950), a prominent collection of essays on the playwright. While at NYU, Holzknecht acted as president of the College Conference on English in the Central Atlantic States (1945-47) and president of the Renaissance Club of New York City. He was the recipient of the Sesquicentennial Medal from the University of Louisville in 1948. Holzknecht was born July 5, 1899 and died on March 23, 1956 at the age of 55. He was married to Eleanore Butler of Pennsylvania from 1924 to 1956.
