What is LGBT services

Clay:

It provides a safe place for students to go, for students to be themselves. A lot of people think it’s unnecessary but I think it’s a very necessary thing because the world can be a very scary place sometimes, especially for LGBT youth. So it provides a safe haven and a place of education, and friends.

Amber:
It’s where I go during like the holidays. It’s who I spend most of my time with on campus, off campus, during weekends, during breaks. I’m there, every day.

Emily:
A space and a place of affirmation to me. Because it’s one thing to say I’m queer but it’s another thing to have someone else affirm that, and kind of help you through your process.

Katy:
And we have Brian Buford to sort of serve as not only an advisor but a mentor as well.

Brian:
It just blows me away. It just makes me so excited to work for the University of Louisville. I’ve always been proud, all my 20 years at U of L have been good ones. But the last 2 ½ years working in the LGBT Services office and being the first director of that program have been just the most exciting of my life.

Shane:
We as LGBT students can have some sort of safe place to go, or people who can relate to us and relate to what we are going through as we make our way through college.

Dejai:
Connections network, and people watching over you, at the university.

Ashley:
Baller.

Zach:,br> You’ll just hear it from a friend or a friend will be like let’s go here. And then you’ll just end up there and be like, wow, this is an amazing space.

James:
It means the world to me that me and my friends and my community have a spot on campus that we know is a safe space, we know is a place to congregate and have conversations.

Andrea:
It’s my family. It’s the place where I go when I need support. It’s an office that helped me get through my transition, through coming out, and it was really the place that was there when I needed it the most.

Lindsay:
The office and the Intersection and commonGround are like a family to me, so it’s definitely home away from home, which is 20 minutes away.

Grace:
For me it means family. These are just all the people I’ve become really close with in the last year. So it’s really awesome to have that support network to go to whenever I need. And then it’s good to give back to them and to be the same person for them that they are for me.

Natalie:
It is a group of people that come from different places and different backgrounds and come together and form this close, tight-knit family.
