Speakers Bureau
Interested in discussing a LGBT-related topic in your class or meeting? The Office for LGBT Services can provide a trained speaker or panel to address just about any audience. Whatever the setting, we will work with you to tailor the presentation to your specific needs. Some popular presentations include:
- LGBT Speak Outs: This popular format for discussing issues is made up of a panel of students with an emphasis on their personal coming out stories, the real-life experiences of LGBT people, and interaction with the audience. Speak-outs are a powerful way to explore diversity, oppression, sexuality, and tolerance.
- Heterosexual Privilege: This presentation explores how people participate in racism, sexism, classism, heterosexism, and other forms of oppression without realizing it. The concept of "privilege" refers to being part of a group that systematically benefits from oppression, and this session looks at how that happens, why we are often unaware that we are a part of it, and what we can do about it.
- Trans 101: An interactive discussion of the basic concepts and terms regarding the transgender experience. While society's understanding of gay and lesbian issues has come a long way, many people admit to feeling confused about what "transgender" really is all about. This class dispels the myths and sheds some light on gender identity and expression.
