What is the Volunteer Standardized Patient program?

For UL faculty and staff from the schools of Nursing, Dental, and Medicine

The Volunteer Standardized Patient program represents a powerful educational tool to help students in the health sciences understand the key issues, attitudes, and skills health professionals need to cultivate to successfully provide excellent care to people in the LGBT community. When you contact the LGBT Center to ask for an SP program you will be involved in helping to craft patient/provider scenarios appropriate for your students/ discipline. The LGBT Center will be responsible for reaching out to our cadre of community members who have expressed interest in being a volunteer SP and providing facilitation.

Generally, the SP program includes:

-1-5 standardized patients and a facilitator from the LGBT Center

-45-90 minutes worth of program time

-7-10 minutes for 1-2 students to interact with an SP

-5-10 minutes of debrief after each SP encounter

-at least 10 minutes of large group debriefing with an LGBT Center facilitator
