Economic Development through Research

UofL is forging a path for new economic opportunity resulting from university research. Guided by HB1, UofL is committed, along with the Louisville Metro community, to make the city a global leader and center of excellence in the health and life sciences.

A robust life sciences center will:

  • Sustain Kentucky’s new economy with innovation, commercialization and economic development
  • Create more high-paying jobs by maturing early-stage companies that employ additional management, researchers and technical staff
  • Improve citizens’ health and quality of life by taking great ideas from the lab to the marketplace
  • Our determination is best illustrated by the goals we set for our affiliates Nucleus and Metacyte, and by our expansion plans for UofL’s health sciences campus in downtown Louisville through the tax increment financing (TIF) buildout. Nucleus and MetaCyte work with UofL to create:
  • A seamless commercialization process yielding viable companies
  • A combined value of these companies exceeding $1 billion and employing thousands of people
